SOUTH TARANAKI MATCHES. On Saturday at Hawera Manaia decisively beat Midlands by 163 runs against their opponents’ 58. Top scorers for the victors were Maunsell (not out 64) and Bairstow (36). Tiddy, 14 not out, was chief scorer for Midlands. The best bowling average was that of A. Hughes (Manaia), who got six wickets for 25. The match Kaponga v. Okaiawa, played at Kaponga, resulted in a good win for the visitors, thanks to Penny’s efforts in compiling 69 out of a total of 134. Kaponga, who batted first, made 65. Penny (Okaiawa) came out with the flattering average of 8 for 22. Rain interfered with the Eltham v. Excelsior match, played at Taumata Park, Eltham, and the match was left unfinished. Cole played well for 82 not out, and Eltham declared with seven wickets down for 151. Excelsior had lost eight wickets for 93 (Pratt 42) when the game had to be stopped. A keenly contested game between the Patea “A” and “B” teams resulted in a win by 28 runs for the “A” team. The “B” team’s score of 118 was chiefly due to the efforts of Harding and Harrison, who made 43 each, whilst Gibbs (retired, 41) and Cunningham (49) were the only double-figure scorers for the winners, who made a total of 146.
