FIRES.
OUTBREAKS AT ORMONDVILLE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dannevirke, Feb. 23. A series of fires has occurred at Ormondville. On Wednesday morning at daybreak W. H. Edkin’s bakery and dwelling were totally destroyed. Early this morning the building known as Groome’s, an old shop which was unoccupied, was also burned, having apparently been set fire to in two places. About 1 a.m. a fire was also discovered in the public library, but was extinguished by a bucket brigade after considerable damage had been caused. This morning the police arrested Bartram Alexander Heigh on a charge of setting fire to Groome’s shop. It is probable there will be further developments concerning the fire in the library. WOOL STORE DESTROYED. Foxton, Feb. 23. Between midnight and one o’clock this morning a fire broke out in txjvin and Comany’s wool and hemp store at the wharf, completely destroying the large building and contents. The latter included wool and hemp. The easterly breeze carried the flames away from the adjacent railway and harbor board building and, although the heat was terrific, these were saved. The value of the wool and hemp destroyed and the insurances are not yet available. This is the second fire within a week at the wharf. The A shed, owned by the Harbor Board, was previously destroyed. The cause of the outbreaks is a mystery. Incendiarism is suspected. The total' loss will run into thousands of pounds.
