RIFLE SHOOTING.
DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING OPENS TO-DAT. By Telegraph.—Press ’Association. Greytown, Last Night. Preparations for the New Zealand rifle championship meeting, which, owing to the Government's economy measures, was abandoned as a Dominion Rifle Association fixture at Trentham and is being teld in conjunction with the Walrarapa Association, are now complete. The full ei„ry list is not yet available, but so far about three hundred competitors are in the running for the belt honors, and more are expected. Already a good number have arrived and put In practice to gain an insight into the eccentricities of the range. The weather is dull and inclined to rain, but hopes are expressed that it will clear for a start early to-mbrrow morning. Several front rank marksmen are here already, and there are others among those arriving to-night. The contingents from the South Island and Auckland are not as strong as usual, which Is a< -ounted for by the uncertainty which prevailed for some time as to whether tte belt and other championships associated with the Trentham meeting would be incorporated with the Walrarapa fixture, so that the men could not make the necessary arrangements for the trip. The range at Papawai having only twenty targets as compared with 75’ at Trentham makes the jask of putting a large entry through a very full programme appear one of considerable difficulty. The local association's executive, however, assisted by the chief officials of the Dominion Rifle Association, have their organisation well in hand, and with favorable weather no hitch should occur.
