H.M.S. CHATHAM.
VISIT TO NEW PLYMOUTH. ARRIVES SUNDAY EVENING. ARRANGEMENTS IN HAND. A meeting of the executive which was set up to arrange details in connection with the visit to New Plymouth of H.M.S. (Chatham was held last night, the Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson) presiding. The Mayor said he was in receipt of the following message from the commodore of the Chatham: “Chatham expects to arrive 7 p.m. Sunday and leave 7 p.m. Tuesday. Owing to Chatham anchoring outside, request no calls till Monday and regret no definite arrangements can be made for leave, as same depends on sea and weather.” The Mayor said it was impossible to arrange other than a tentative programme under these conditions. Mr. P. Stainton suggested that two sub-committees be set up, one to arrange for the entertainment of the officers and the other for the men. This suggestion was carried into effect, the Mayor, Messrs. C. E. Bellringer, J. Connett, Newton King, A. McDiarmid, W. Skinner, S. G. Smith, M.P., with power to add, being appointed for the arranging of the officers’ entertainment, 4nd Messrs. P. Stainton, G. E. Roper, R. A. Large, J. McLeod, A. Humphries, R. L. Parkin, with power to add, tfor the men.
The question of transportation of the public from the wharf to the ship arose, as it is understood there is practically no likelihood of the Chatham berthing owing to the City of Corinth occupying the deep water berth. A committee to arrange this was set up, and consisted of the Mayor, Messrs. S. G. Smith and C. E. Bellringer, who will confer with Captain Waller (harbormaster) and make the necessary arrangements. Launches were suggested, but these have to be in charge of certificated men. It later transpired that only three launches world be available, inner suggestions were the procuring of the Rarawa if she is in port, or the Wetere from Waitara.
A committee to deal with finance was appointed, as follows: The Mayor, Messrs. Stainton, Carter, Weston, List and Burgess. It was thought that the generosity of the public would have to be relied on for the amount over ana above local bodies’ grants. Consideration was given to a suggestion to hold an impromptu dance on the Monday evening if the men are granted leave.
It was thought better to make the arrangements for visiting the Chatham for Monday, so as to leave a day in hand if the weather proved unfavorable.
The two entertainment committees then met separately. The men’s committee decided to arrange a motor drive out to Inglewood, via different routes on the Tuesday morning, and all carowners willing to provide cars for the occasion are asked to get in touch wick members of the committee. It was thought the Inglewood people might co-operate by providing morning tea. On the return to town a cold luncheon will be provided at Kawaroa Park, if the society are willing, when a short toast list will be arranged. A suggestion which was favorably received was that an orchestra should be obtained for the occasion. The afternoon will be free -for the men to see round the town and environs or provide their own entertainment.
Ladies willing to help with the luncheon are asked to meet at the Soldiers’ Club to-morrow afternoon. It was estimated that at most 150 men will have to be provided for.
The officers’ committee propose to take the officers for a drive to the mountain on the Monday, have luncheon there and return via Waitara to Newi Plymouth for afternoon tea. On the Tuesday it is hoped to motor the guests round to various spots of interest about town, and private hospitality will be largely relied upon.
