STATE HOUSING.

wRANOH CLOSED DOWN. SCHEME STILL EXISTS. By Telegraph—Press Aiaoehtton. Wellington, Feb. 18. The Premier announced yesterday that the housing branch of the Labor Department would be closed down Immediately, as the results had not justified expectations. This, however, did not mean that the Government was going out of the business of providing homes for the people. The workers’ dwelling scheme remained in existence and would be administered by the Labor Department. The Advances to Workers’ branch would also continue to operate and ths Government was still advancing money to local bodies within the prescribed limits and may be able presently to increase the advances, but the attempt to solve the housing problem by the direct efforts of Government officials was being abandoned.
