Sir Horace Plunkett, the distinguished Irishman, sailed for Cherbourg today. He said many Americans asked whether Irishmen were not raising some doubt regarding their capacitv for selfgovernment, and he added: “I do not think the critics understand the extraordinary conditions in which Ireland exists. The American struggle for freedom was much retarded by differences among Americans and in our struggle there are differences among ourselves. Everything is bound to go wrong before it is righted, but there is no alternative to self-government. Any attempt to restore British rule would result in prolongation of the troubles.'* —Aus.-NJZ. Cable Assn. SHOOTING IN LIMERICK. LIEUTENANT SHOT DEAD. Received Feb. 19, 5.5 p.m. London, Feb. 17. Two brothers returning from a coursing meeting in Limerick were asked to pull up and supply another party with a tin of petrol. The brothers refused, and a running fight ensued extending for three miles, in which three were shot. Later three others were arrested by Irish Republican police. Lieutenant Jellico, of the Royal Engineers, was shot dead in Cork while visiting friends in mufti.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. Received Feb. 19, 11.5 p.m. London, Feb. 18.
