TARANAKI TOURNAMENT. THE CONCLUDING DAY. FINALS DECIDED. The Taranaki lawn tennis tournament was concluded on Saturday, the weather again being perfectly fine. The semi-finals were played in the morning and the finals in the afternoon, when about 300 people witnessed the various games being fought out The standard of play was again high. The winners of the tournament were:— Men’s championship singles.—-Wallace. Men’s championship doubles.—Wallace and Dickie. Ladies’ championship singles.—Miss Ballantyne. Ladles’ championship doubles.—Misses Brewster and Rundle. Combined championship doubles.—Nicholson and Miss Brewster. Men's handicap singles, A grade.—Grant. Men’s handicap singles, B grade.—Merron. Men’s handicap doubles.—Tate and Grant. Ladies handicap singles.—Miss Ballantyne. Ladies’ handicap doubles. —Miss Boon and •Mrs. Weston. CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS. MEN’S SINGLES. Semi-finals. Wallace beat Webster 7—5, 6—4. Dickie won from Nicholson by default. Final. Wallace beat Dickie 6—l, 7—2, 7—5. s MEN’S DOUBLES. Semi-finals. Nicholson and Webster won from Grant and Tate by default. Wallace and Dickie beat Allison and Archer 6—4, 6—2. Final. Dickie and Wallace beat Nicholson and Webster B—6, 6—l, 6—2. The first set was very closely contested and 'vantage games had to be played, but Dickie and Wallace won the remaining sets fairly easily. * LADIES’ SINGLES. Final. Miss Ballantyne beat Miss Brewster 6 —4, o—6, 6—o. A very even game, each winning a set, hut Miss Ballantyne easily prevailed in tte last set. The sets were chiefly conspicuous for the number oi nne rallies. LADIES’ DOUBLES. Semi-final. Misses Greatbatch and D. Simpson beat Misses Ballantyne and Valentine 6—5, 6—2. Final. Misses Brewster and Rundle beat Misses Greatbatch and Simpson 6—5, 6—l. COMBINED DOUBLES. Semi-final. Nicholson and Miss Brewster beat Wallace and Mrs. Wallace 6—3, 6—2. Final. PRIZE-GIVING. i After the conclusion of play the distribution -of trophies took place. Mr. J. C. Nicholson, in a short speech, said that the tournament had proved most successful in all ways. He thanked the officials for the good work they had done, particularly Messrs. Griffiths, Baltarry and Etherington (secretary), and Mr. Little, who had been so indefatigable as an umpire. The winners were congratulated, Mr. Nicholson particularly mentioning Messrs. Wallace and Dickie, of Waverley, who had been the backbone of the tournament for many seasons now. They had set an example In the standard of play, and, more important, in, sportsmanship. The trophies were then presented by Mrs. Nicholson. The championship cup for men’s singles went to Wallace, who had won the trophy on several previous occasions.

NEW PLYMOUTH v. WAVERLEY. , INTER-CLUB MATCH TO-DAY. A match between teams representing the New Plymouth, and Waverley clubs is to be played on the New Plymouth courts to-day, commencing at 11 a.in. Unfortunately J. C. Nicholson is unable to play for the New Plymouth Club on accouont 'of an injury. This leaves the teams very even, and a close contest should result. The teams are:— New Plymouth.—C. B. Webster, Dr. Alison, K. G. Archer, J. Hine, E. Griffiths, Dr. Fookes. Emergency: E. King. Ladies: Miss Ballantyne, Miss Brewster, Miss Rundle, Miss Greatbatch. THE WILDING SHIELD. CANTERBURY BEAT WELLINGTON. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. The Wilding Shield match concluded on Saturday in perfect weather, when Canterbury defeated Wellington by ten matches to two. The only Wellington player to win on Saturday was Parker, who defeated Wilding In straight sets after being I—4 in the second. Salmond gave a good exhibition against Greenwood. Ollivler, who made few mistakes, outclassed Swanston.
