AUSTRALIAN LEATHER. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Sydney, Feb. 17. Mangrovite Bleting, Ltd., report that the export leather trade is almost extinct. New Zealand, under Die new tariff, imposes prohibitive duties on Australian leather. The Commonwealth should not hesitate to effect a reciprocal agreement. THE COMMONWEALTH LINE. Melbourne, Feb. 17. Commenting on the criticism of Sir Kenneth Anderson, of the Orient Company, Mr. Hughes stated that Sir Kenneth’s concern for the future of the Commonwealth line is a cloak for the fact that the line is a thorn m the side of those desiring to establish a complete monopoly of ocean-going transport. Though* freights are high they would be higher if Australia did not own her own shipping. A RIVER TRAGEDY. Sydney, Feb.. 17. A river tragedy is reported from South Woodburn. Mrs. Dagg. two i children and a sister-in-law were drivi ing a sulky in the evening along the i bank of the Richmond River. It is surI mised that the horse backed the sulky | over the bank. All were drowned. 1 NEW MOTOR-CYCLING RECORD. Sydney, Feb. 17. Allan Sadler broke the motor-cycling record from Melbourne to Sydney by 38 minutes, his time being 17hr. 33min.
