NEW VALUATIONS.

COMPLETION OF ROLLS DELAYED!* POSITION IN NEW PLYMOUTH. AFFECTS RATE DEMANDS. “The delay in completing the new valuation rolls is causing considerable inconvenience and will probably result in the rate demands for the ensuing year being issued much later than usual,” says the general manager of the New Plymouth Borough Council in his monthly report. He continues: “The council will remember that in August, 1920, the Valuer-General promised that these new rolls would be available for the past rating year. As, however, a start had not been made with the work in January, 1921. I recommended the council ■’ to adopt the old valuation rdll. It was well that this course was followed, otherwise the council would have been involved in considerable financial difficulty. Up to the present the Assessment Court has not sat to deal with the objections to the valuations, and we have not been able to Obtain information of the total valuations upon, which to have next year’s estimates. The preparation of the new rate book also takes some little time and a start cannot be made with thia until the new rolls come to hand. “For months past this position had been anticipated and representations were made to the Valuer-General to expedite matters; I even went so far as to inform the Valuer-General that if it were unlikely that the new rolls would b available before the end of March I would recommend the council to use the old rolls again. He has now intimated that he , will endeavor to expedite matters and will supply the rolls subject to any alterations which may be made by the Assessment Court. It is not, however, anticipated that the rolls will be in our possession until the end of the present .onth. He also states that the old rolls have beeji cancelled and therefore cannot be used for next year’s rating. Under the circum* stances we are entirely in the hand*, of the department and beyond urging them to expedite matters we can do nothing further.”
