COAL FROM BRITAIN.
STEAMER FOR NEW PLYMOUTH. DISTRIBUTION TO PALMERSTON. The Ellerman Line steamer City of Corinth, with a large cargo of Welsh coal for the Railway Department, is expected to reach New Plymouth from Cardiff direct on Tuesday. This marks a further development in the deep-sea port of Taranaki, being the first direct steamer to arrive here from the Welsh port. The cargo comprises 6180 tons of coal, and it is expected the work, of discharge will keep the steamer in port for ten or twelve days. Another interesting feature is that the despatch of the vessel to this port is recognition of the value of New Plymouth as the distributing centre of the west coast of the North Island, for the coal is to be railed from here as far south as Palmerston North. The larger portion of the coal is for Wanganui. The City of Corinth is a steamer of 6200 tons gross register, and is about 400 feet in length. Messrs. Newton King, Ltd., are the agents.
