TEACHERS’ SALARIES
TRIFLING REDUCTIONS’ By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Feb. 16. The Hon. C. J. Par.r. interviewed, said the reduction in t t 'hers’ salaries is not made by the Act passed last month. The statute empowers the Minister of Education by regulation to reduce teachers’ salaries and the reduction must therefore be made by Gazette notice. “As z matter of fact,' he said., “the Departmental officers and myself have been engaged for the la:-t fortnight on the scheme. I have also taken the opportunity of consulting with the. New Zealand ’ Educational Institute and had the benefit of their advice. On Tuesday I finally approved of the. scheme. The scheme is a slightly graduated one. beginning at a reduction of £lO and* rising tc £l5 maximum. I think the teachers will be satisfied 1 have done the best possible for them under the circumstances. I’heso remarks apply only to primary school teachers. With regard to secondary and technical schoolmasters the decrease ; will 'be relative' ■ on the same plane.”
