THE MEAT POOL.
ELECTION OF THE BOARD COMMITTEE TO MEET SOON. The committee elected at the recent Producers' Conference is to meet in Wellington on February 27 to deal with the question of the election of the Meat Export Board. In the meantime, regulations under the Meat Export Control Act are being prepared, and some o-f them may be issued before the committee meets.
T|ie names of some probable members of the board are being mentioned by prominent producers, but there can be no announcement on the point much before the end of the month. It is recognised that the selection of the producers’ representatives on the board is matter for grave consideration. The elected members will constitute a majority. The nomination of the two Government representatives may be held over until the producers’ representatives have been chosen. Debates in Parliament indicated that Ministers and members were impressed with the importance of giving the commercial interests some representation on the board. The member to be selected *by the stock and station companies will be a commercial man, but it is thought likely that he will not be the only city man on. the board.
The Prime Minister announced some time ago that the director of the Imperial Supplies Department (Mr. T. R. Lees) was going to London as a special representative of the Government to inquire regarding the marketing and distribution of New Zealand produce and to make some final adjustments in connection with the Imperial contracts. Mr. Lees was to have left ■for London last month, but he has been detained here pending the completion of the pooling scheme. He has been one of the advisers of the Meat ; Pool committee. SELECTION OF THE BOARD. PRODUCERS’ COMMITTEE WILL CHOOSE MEMBERS. The five representatives of the producers on the first Meat Producers’ Board, to control the operations of the proposed pool, will 'be selected by the producers’ committee and the unofficial parliamentary committee when they meet in Wellington on February 27. This statement was made by the Prime Minister on Wednesday. It is intended that a new board, to be elected next year, shall be more directly representa-. tive of the whole body of producers. The speedy constitution of the first board, which has to make the’ preliminary arrangements for the pool, is considered to 'be important. The producers’ committee was selected by the big conference of producers in Wellington early last month. It consists of fourteen members, seven from each island. The names of these members are as follow: — NORTH ISLAND. W. Polson (Wanganui), J. S. Jes-sep (Wairoa). W- Perry (Masterton), T. A. Duncan (Hunterville), H. B. William • (Gisborne), G. Pearce (Taranaki), and A. E. Harding (Dargaville). SOUTH ISLAND J. Begg (Otago). A. J. Murray (Kaikoura), -I. C. N. Grigg (Ashburton), E. Bowman (Southland). J. O. Coop (Aka--10a), D. G. Wright (Canterbury), and E. P. Burberry (North Canterbury). The unofficial parliamentary committee contains Messrs. D. Jones (Kaiapoi), who is chairman of the combined com mittee, A. D- McLeod (Wairarapa), O J. Hawken (Egmont), W. S. Glenn (Rangitikei), and A. Hamilton (Awarua).
