THE TEST SELECTION. WON BY PALMERSTON NORTH. NEW PLYMOUTH SECOND. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The band contest was continued today. Results: B flat trombone solo.—Marshall (Second Otago Battalion, Invercargill (90, E. Tallentine (Wellington Tramways) 89, J. Sara (Westport Garrison) 87. E flat bass solo.—R. Wilson (Woolston) 95, Proutt (Masterton Municipal) 94, G. Munro (Auckland Artillery) 91, C. Miller (Canterbury Mounted) 90. Baritone solo. —J. Williams (Woolston) 93, R. Boyd (Wellington Garrison) 91, M. McKenzie (Hamilton) 89. Following are the aggregate points gained by the various bands in the two test selections (the result means that Palmerston North has won. the selection contest and a cash prize of £lOO attached thereto, hut the allocation of the Boosey Challenge Shield will not be made until after the quick-step competition) : Palmerston North 285 4th Wellington Regiment, New Plymouth 276 Marton Municipal 267 Wellington Patriotic Society .... 266 Westport Garrison 266 Masterton Municipal 205 Christchurch Tramways 203 Nelson Silver Band 259 Hawera Citizens 257 Hamilton Municipal 256 Second B grade selection (“Madame Butterfly”).—Palmerston North Municipal 146, 4th Wellington Regiment, New Plymouth 142, Masterton Municipal 140, Wellington Patriotic Society 137. Other competitors were: Nelson Silver Band 132, Hamilton Municipal 130, Marton Municipal 131, Westport Garrison 138, Hawera Citizens 134, Christchurch Tramways 135.

“I feel a bit more cheerful about things to-night anyway,” said the adjudicator (Mr. Shugg) amidst cheers from the bandsmen and others. He went on to say that in his opinion “Madame Butterfly” was a difficult test —too difficult, he thought, for B grade bands. This remark from the judge also met with enthusiastic applause. Mr. Shugg added that some of the contesting bands had done very good work.
