RIFLE SHOOTING.

THE TARANAKI MEETING. FIFTEENTH ANNUAL TOURNAMENT. The Taranaki Rifle Association’s fifteenth annual meeting was held at the Rewa Rewa rifle range. New Plymouth, yesterday. in fine weather. The conditions were not favorable to good shooting, there being a gusty cross wind. The light was good, -except at times when the smoke from a fire burning near the range interfered with the visibility. The entries totalled 61, as compared with 73 last year. The gathering was a fair!}’ representative one, and included entries from New /Plymouth, Hawera, Kaponga, Patea, Inglewood, Tahora, Linton, Wanganui, Feilding. Akarana (Auckland), Wellington, Blenheim, Thames, Waitara, Waverley and Marton. The management of the meeting was in very able hands, and much credit is due to those who were in charge for the very capable manner in which all the events were got off. It had been decided to try and complete all the events in one day Instead of two days, as in previous years, and the last event was fired at about 6 p.m. in a good light. All the events this year were one range ones, and this doubtless enabled the officials to cut out the extra day. The principal officials were: Captain F. Hartnell (president of the association) in charge on the firing mound, assisted by Messrs. JEJ. vV. M. Lysons and W. (Oliver, Captain Boon and Sergeant-Major Roper, In charge of marking; E. Armitage, secretary, assisted by Messrs. S. G. Smith, M.P., and F. -J. Hill; Mesdames Hill, Oliver, Hartnell, Beal, and Misses Hartnell and Sole, committee in charge luncheon and afternoon tea arrangements. The shooting, on the whole, was of low average, but was very fair and quite up to standard when the adverse wind conditions were considered. At the conclusion of the : meeting those trophies which were available were presented to winners by Mr. S. G. Smith, M. 1., and cheers were called for the ladies who had taken charge l of the catering and for the other officials.’ Details are:— KAPONGA MATCH. (300 yards; 10 shots.) £4—A. H. The annual meeting of the Taranaki Rifle Association was held at the New Plymouth Soldiers’ Club last night. Captain F. Hartnell, president of the association, was In the chair, and there was an attendance of about twenty. The annual report for 1921 stated that the year had not been a success financially, and the meeting had been run at. a. loss of £22. The cost of running amounted in all to a little over £3O. It was thought that a change in the programme with an Increased amount of money might attract a larger number of entries. Should the entries be again considerably lower than the number on which the programme is based it would be for the meeting to consider the future policy of the association—whether the meetings should be abandoned, if a change in the date of tire meeting would be an advantage to the association, or if reverting to a programme based on a small number of low rees would be of advantage to it. The balancesheet showed a credit balance of £44 0s la. The chairman said that before considering the election of officers for the ensuing year the meeting should consider whether or not it would be \ advisable to hold a. meeting next year, (nie association had an enthusiastic band of workers who did not care how much trouble went, to so, long as the meeting was acceptable 'to riflemen. They had thought that by launching out and providing good prize money they would attract a bigger number of marksmen, and it was x a pity that they Fad had to cut the prize money down.

Mr. C. H. Moore moved that the association be continued, and that future meetings should bo held at about the same time of the year as previous meetings. The motion was carried. The following officers were elected: Patron, Colonel Ellis; president, Captain F. Hartnell; vice-president. Colonel /C. H. Weston, D. 5.0.; council, Messrs. P. Palmer, M. Carey (Patea), P. J. Mayhew (Linton), A. P. Anderson (Wanganui) , J. F. Atkinson (Auckland), J. Smart (Wellington), A. R. Standish, F. J. Hill, W. Oliver (New Plymouth) ; executive, P. Palmer, H. H. Gilshan (Patea), W. Jarvis (Ohura), F. C. Coxhead (Tahora), A. H. bones, P. Peterson, D. Roots (Hawera), G. Smith, A. H. Guy (Kaponga), G. H. Taylor (Inglewood), O. P. George, C. Sampson (Waitara), F. C. Coxhead (Tahora), J. G. H. Taylor (Inglewood), D. Scannell (Hawera), G. R. Smith, S. J. Bollard (Kaponga), W. Oliver, C. H. Moore, W. Bruce, S. Higgs, S. Rumson, H. McGahey, G. G. Grover, F. J. Hill, Major Sandford, C. D. Arnold, O. George (New Plymouth) ; hon. auditor, Mr. A. Humphries; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr. E. Anmitage.
