GALA AT HAWERA.
FIRE BRIGADES’ DEMONSTRATION. PLUNKET SOCIETY’S FETE. The Taranaki District United Fire Brigades’ Association’s demonstration, held in conjunction with the Plunket Society’s fete, took place at the Hawera A. and P. Association’s ground yesterday. The number of entries for the fire brigades’ demonstration was a great disappointment to the demonstration committee, which had worked hard to make the day a big gala attraction for the public. It was found, however, that the brigades alone would not be able to provide sufficient attraction, and the Plunket Society co-operated with the Brigades’ Association and arranged theitf fete to be held at the same time. / Hawera won the championship shield with 102 points, and then came Stratford 79, New Plymouth 60, Eltham 36, Manaia and Patea 9 each. Though the sky was overcast the weather was fine and could hardly have been better for demonstration work. In the . afternoon there was a fairly large attendance of the public. The fire brigades’ work was of a very interesting nature, and one of the most pleasing features was a demonstration by a team of the Hawera junior fire brigade, whose work was very creditable. A procession led by the Opunake Band and followed by a decorated car containing mothers and Plunket babies and the fire engine, and made up of school children from the various Hawera schools in rancy dress .costumes, marched from the fire station ’to the grounds. There were several ' prettily decorated tricycles amongst the procession. The Opunake Band was in attendance during the afternoon and played an enjoyable programme of music. The results of the various events were as follow:—• FIRE BRIGADE EVENTS.
