A BROKEN ENGAGEMENT. THE MAN WITH A GUN. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last' Night. At the Supreme Court charges were preferred against Oscar- Price of having at Kaituna, on October 22, attempted to discharge h loaded gun at Albert Newton and Annie Duncan with intent to do grievious bodily harm, and with having assaulted each of the parties named. Accused was engaged to the girl, but she broke it off because of his jealousy. On October 22 Newton and Miss Duncan were sitting at tea, when accused entered the room and presented the gun at the girl. Newton took the weapon away from him and found that accused had attempted to discharge it. Accused was peculiar in his manner, but not irresponsible. Counsel for accused said that accused was a man of poor mentality and it would be a hard task to prove that he had a guilty intention in his mind when he appeared in the room with the 'gun. The jury, after an hour’s retirement, brought in a verdict of guilty of assault by pointing a gun at Miss Duncan. •Sentence was deferred till Friday.
