YESTERDAY’S COMPETITIONS. NEW PLYMOUTH SUCCESS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The band contest was continued today. The competitions resulted:— Euphonium solo (own selection).— Lowe (Fourth Wellington Regiment, New Plymouth) 91, 1; Bryant (Hastings) 89, 2; Croft (Wellington Watersiders) 88, 3; Ovens (Gisborne) 86, 4. Seventeen others competed. 88. flat solo (own selection).—Collins (South Canterbury Regiment) 93, 1; Hanson junr. (Woolston) 92, 2; Crosby (Auckland Artillery) 91, 3; Fenton (Christchurch Tramways) 88, 4. B grade test selection, “Giralda.”— Palmerston North Municipal 139 points 1, Marton Municipal 136 2, Fourth Wellington Regiment, New Plymouth 134 3, Westport* Garrison 130 4. Other competitors were: Wellington Patriotic 129, Nelson Silver 127, Masterton Municipal 125, Hamilton Municipal 126, Hawera Citizens’ 123, Christchurch Tramways 128. The judge (Mr; Shugg), speaking of the players generally, said he was not quite satisfied with the standard readied; in fact, he thought it was rather low considering it was B grade. One of the main faults was loose playing; it was not precise enough. Attack in many cases was not sharp enough. Two or three bands stood out, but the rest were much of the same level. Mr. Pike, conductor of the winners, received an ovation.
