MACLAREN'S ENGLISH TEAM. VISIT TO AUSTRALIA EXPLAINED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn —vop’right. Perth, Feb. 14. McLaren’s letter intimates that a team is leaving England in the first week in September. He adds: "I am not satisfied that our best amateurs were accorded full opportunities by the selectors in the last tests, and England’s strength lies in her amateurs rather than her professionals.” By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Feb. 13. Referring to the Australian Press cables re MacLaren’s cricket team, Mr. J. F. Peake, secretary to the New Zealand Cricket Council, stated that MacLaren was bringing his team out at the invitation of the council. The council had made all arrangements with MacLaren, who undertook -to bring an amateur team out to New Zealand during the 1922-23 season equally as strong as the English team that had defeated the Australians m England. At last MacLaren mr<l written asking If he could make arrangements to, play a few matches in Australia before arriving in New Zealand, and the council had agreed to this course being adopted. The various Australian Cricket Associations were probably being advised by mail of MacLaren’s intentions, and this explained why the Western Australian Association had received worts ana not the New South. Wales Association. The New Zealand Council was in communication with the Australian Board of Control regarding the visit, but no reply had yet been received from that body.
With reference to the statement that it was likely that some members of the Australian eleven would visit New Zealand, Mr. Peake said nothing definite had been decided upon, but the whole matter would be discussed- by the management committee this week.
