CROQUET.
TARANAKI TOURNAMENT. THE OPENING DAY. The Taranaki Croquet Association's first tournament opened at New Plymouth yesterdaj' in beautiful weather. Players form the various clubs of the province are participating, and the grounds of the Park Club, the temporary grounds (the old central bowling green) of the New Plymouth Club, and the Fitzroy grounds are be. Ing employed, the main ones being the Park Club’s. In the absence of the president (Dr. Home), the vice-president (Mr. T. C. List) declared the tournament open. In doing so, he congratulated the association upon the success of its inaugural tournament, and expressed the hope that later on they would be able to arrange for the New Zealand championships to be decided in New Plymouth, which was in so many ways suitable for the holding of sports fixtures. He felt sure the present tournament would improve the play and strengthen the hold of the game in the town and province, and hoped that all participating, especialy the visitors, would spend an enjoyable time during the next few days. Splendid entries have been received for the tournament, and the greens are in excellent order. The tournament Is being managed by a committee representative of the three New Plymouth clubs, with Mrs. D. K. Morrison as beeretary, and all are to be heartily congratulated on tte splendid arrangements. Some good play was witnessed yesterday morning. On the Fitzroy lawn two games were played which occupied fully three hours, one between Miss Ward and Mrs. Courtenay, in which the final scores were 26—21 in favour of Miss Ward, and the other between Mrs. Black and Mrs. McGahey, in which the final scores were 26—23 in favour of Mrs. Black.
