INDIAN IMMIGRANTS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyrignt. Melbourne, Feb. 13. Mr. Hughes explained that the remarks of the Hon. E. S. Montagu respecting the status of Indians in the Dominions referred apparently to Natal, where Indians are denied the franchise and other civil rights. Australia, recently completed reciprocal arrangements with India respecting the treatment of each others citizens. SYDNEY BY-ELECTION. Sydney, Feb. 13. The election campaign is growing warm and both sides are having trouble over the selection of candidates. The only partially healed breach between the Nationalists and Progressives is causing heartburning. A section of the progressives is determined to run its own candidate and is opposed to coalescing with the Nationalists at any price, while the selections in other instances threaten to reSult in vote splitting.
Similarly the moderate and extreme sections of the Labor Party (the Dooi-. eyites arid M‘Girrites) are not a happy' family as regards the choice of candidates in various cases, and unless the Central Executive and some of the district selection committees compose their differences things are likely to be mix'ed.
