OPUNAKE.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) The postponed seaside annual fete was held on Saturday, in ideal weather. There vras a good attendance, but not so large as the attendance of last annual fete. This is accounted fof by the racing attractions and of the fact that farmers and contractors take advantage of the present good weather to complete haymaking, etc. It was practically a day’s outing for the women and children. A large number of youths and children’s races were competed for. Stepping the chain and sheep-guessing events were well supported. The former was won by Mr. A. Hansen, Nurse Macfadzen being second. Six tied in the sheep-gu'essing. a draw resulting, Mr. Sweetali being successful. The ladies’ nail-driving competition, for which there was a big entry, was won by Nurse Macfadzen, after tieing with Mrs. Bowman. There was not so many side shows as previously. The ladies managed the catering exceptionally well. The society has now wellappointed buildings for comfortably accommodating a large number at the tea tables. Mesdames Hickey, Goodey, Winstanley, Pease, Cook and P. Holmes (assisted by a number of others as waitresses) were reponsible for the management of the catering. Mrs. R. F. Hammond and Mr. C. Warner had charge of the refreshment and sweet stalls. The members of the committee, who were noticeable for assisting with the big share of the day, were the sc. retary (Mr. Edmonds), Mesrss. T. S. Hickey, A. Cook, E. .J. Dudley, Pease, Crow, Sinclair, Burton, Windelburn, T. Hughson, Mays, Brunette, Gunson and others. The Federal Band (under Bandmaster J. Humphries) played a first-class programme of music. There was a good exhibition of Highland dancing by the juveniles, namely: Nellie Langton, Mary McLeod, Dorothy Clouston, Jean Kirk, Bonnie and Ailsa Ross, and Masters
J. McLeod and A. Ross. Mr. J. Kirk provided the music. During the afternoon a number of young ladies provided the music (piano) in the hall. In the evening the dance was well patronised. Mr. A. O’Brien organised a staff of gatekeepers, and their assistance was in-
valuable to the society. The Opunake Football Club have got off the mark first with their annual meeting. The club is £5O in debt, and the new secretary (Mr. T. >S. Hickey) has a handicap to overtake Mr. K. Ifwerson (a New Zealand representative) will take charge of the team this season, and over seventy vice-presidents have been appointed. The club has commenced with great hopes for the new season.
