ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGE
MAN AND HIS STEP-BROTHER. CHRISTMAS EVE INCIDENT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, Feb. 13. Joseph E. Switalla was charged in the Police Court with having attempted to murder his step-brother, Jacob Switalla. It was stated that on December 24 he was lying on a couch in his mother’s house at Allanton. Accused came in under the influence of liquor, and the next thing witness realised was three or four blows on the head with something. As he rose he was struck on the back of the neck. He got to his feet and saw accused with an axe. The latter went to strike him again, but his step-mother interfered. Witness went outside and accused followed and struck him on the head with a rail. There was no previous ill-feeling. He thought accused was jealous because he was getting on better with his step-mother, who was the mother of accused. Accused was committed for trial and his defence reserved.
