SOUTH ISLAND RAILWAYS.
CHRISTCHURCH - INVERCARGILL EXPRESS SERVICE. The Minister of Railways stated on Saturday that after very careful consideration it had been decided to run the early express train from Christchurch to Invercarg'll and vice versa on three days a week. The mid-day express Christchurch-Dunedin, the morning express Dunedin-Invercargill, and the afternoon express InvercargillDunedin would run on the other three days. The early morning express from Dunedin to Chrischurch would only be run on three days of the week, on the same days as the mid-day express Chris tch urch-Dun edin.
“Tins will give one daily express service on the southern lines,” said the Minister. “The matter is a very complicated one, and in dealing with it, it has been recognised a certain amount of inconvenience must necessarily arise. The question that had to be determined was how the inc/onvenienee could best be equalised, and after full discussion and investigation it appears to be quite clear, having regard to all the circumstances and the general public convenience, the decision to run through service Christchurch-Invercar-gill and vice versa on three days, and local express between Christchurch and Dunedin, and Dunedin and Invercargill vice versa on the other three days, is the best arrangement that can Ibe made. These arrangements will come into operation on February 20.
