PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY. (By “Moturoa.”) Prospects for the second day of the Taranaki Jockey Club meeting, which concludes to-day, look bright. The weather appears to be settled, and this should be all that is required to ensure a good attendance, as Saturday is the half-holiday at this end of the province. The acceptances also are good, and the quality of tie fields throughout should ensure good racing and keen speculation.

The Okqke Hurdles, which opens the day. has drawn a field of eight, anh though it is a qqqrter of a mile further and Active has gone up 131bs, Thursday's winner should oe hard to beat. Miss Melva and Complex should also be in tte picture.

Nine have paid up for the Kawau Hack, run over eight and .a half furlongs. Voluble finished on well on Thursday, but probably Molleen Oge and Danil off will be close up at the finish.

The Taranaki Stakes, though endowed with 750 sovs., is- again a disappointment. Only three owners are represented, and with Gloaming and Vespucci entered the race is a foregone conclusion. Probably Mr. Alexander will do as he las done on several previous occasions and start Silver Link so as to give a little interest -<o the race, and not leave this classic, as was the ease a year or two ago at Hawera. a walk over for the Greenwood pair.

The Omata Hack has drawn eleven, and though Still Sea has gone up 141bs, the Absurd horse will be hard to beat. Possibly Roman will be well supported.

Of the twelve in the Paul Memorial Esmont Park reads well with 7.5, but Truthful also should give a good account of herself. Illumination's chances are fancied.

Six remain in the Nursery. Wake Up and Wairarapa won nicely on Thursday, but The Dunce will probably command most atten-

In the Urenui Electric Hack eleven remain In, and of these probably Potoa King and Halligan will be best supported.

Rational las been withdrawn from the Jackson Stakes, to be run&at the Wanganui autumn meeting. Vespucci at Hawera, and Vespucci at New Plymouth were two different horses. Kareao cost his party some money at Hawera. but they must have got it back with interest at New* Plymouth on Thursday. The

Maniapoto gelding paid the best “price” of the day. If was a strange coincidence that Wake Up and Awake should both win on Thursday, and both returned their backers nice dividends. They should be heard of again. How on earth did Songbird come to pay ‘‘the limit” at Dunedin ? He has been winning all over the country lately, and is a top-notcb colt over sprint and middle distances.

Mr. W. R. Kemball’s run of bad luck was broken on Thursday, when his pair. Trespass and Vagabond, ran first and second in the Dunedin Cup. Considering their forward running at Riccarton they paid a nice "price.” Considering the present financial depression the attendance and receipts at New Plymouth on Thursday were very satisfactory. Nice betting fields tempted the public, and the club got out of it much lighter than the majority that are racing at present.

Away from the course Landslide was a very strong order for the Taranaki Cup, particularly up north, and when the result came through it was received with shrieks of silence.

Trainer R. Mason led in his sixteenth winner of the Middle Park Plate since 1884 when Pluto won there last week. Such a record is unparalleled.

Two years ago Mr. W. G. Stead had the satisfaction of winning the Taranaki Cup with Surveyor, but there his luck stopped. Surveyor was second to Warplane last year, and Truthful second to Vespucci on Thursday. Brother Gerald won with Wishful m 1918.

When the ex-Taranakl gelding Perfect Day won the Gisborne Cup Auckland layers received a bad knock. Still, things have been pretty good for the Bar Vons lately.

A Gisborne scribe states that Mr. Ulie Shannon's handicapping for the local meeting caused considerable dissatisfaction amongst owners and trainers, and the acceptance lis? suffered in consequence. Sydney papers are questioning, whether y ar . ceur can stay, probably looking forwara to his A.J.C. Derby chances. It Is a fa»- cry to Derby Day, but possibly Tressayr, and not Farceur, may be the Greenwood elect next spring.

The Linnet, who is engaged in the Sapling Stakes at Woodville on Wednesday, is a full sister to Songbird (KillJroney—Grey Linnet). She is trained by L. Wilson, and is reported to be vpry fast.

Little River is a greatly improved horse, and should be w.ell in the limelight at Woodville. Earthshine, and Dissertation will also take some heading off at the same gathering. Winning Hit’s chance in the MMdle Park Plate was marred by the colt carrying the tapes in his mouth, while the winner, Pluto, was first away, and had everything in his favour. Southern scribes do not accept Winning Hit’s d.eieat as conclusive proof that he is inferior to the Sutala colt.

Amythas made a great effort undeh 10.5 to win his second Dunedin Cup. As a rule in distance races the heavy-weight brigade are generally beaten by squibs, but some great weights have been carried to victory in the race under notice. Notable wins were ffiose of Warstep, who carried 9.13; Long Angelos 9.5; Royal Stag 9.4; Bee 9.2; Amythas 9.1; and Oiyoi 9.0.

The Rangitikel Racing Club publishes its programme for the annual meeting, to ue held at Bulls on March 22 and 23. The Cup, one mile and a quarter, is worth 325 sovs.; the Fraser Memorial Handicap, one mile and a distance, 220 sovs. Three open races are carded each day, as well as maiden flat, and hack hurdle events. Mr. J. E. Henrys will do the handicapping, and Mr. C. O'Connor the starting. Nominations for all events close on Monday, February 27, at 9 p.m.

Good fields will he seen out at Te Kuiti to-day. Booinerday and Radiant Lifijit should divide favoritism in the Cup, while Callaghan should take a lot of beating in whatever races he starts. Pepin looks well in the hurdlp race, and Arran may carry them along smartly in the Farewell Handicap. Harry Pell, an old-time horseman, died last week. He was one of the gamest and best of the early day eross-country riders, and won the Wellington Steeples on Kangaroo; the Hawke’s Bay Steeples on Oldfellow; and many other good races. Accidents on the course and on the football field rendered him almost a cripple foi* many years.

In chatting about Sasanof’s retirement, a writer in the New Zealand Referee said: ‘‘Sasanof as a two-year-old won £990 in stakes; as a three-year-old, £10,965; as a four-year-old, £445; as a five-year-old, £4905; as a sx-year-old, £1835; as a seven-year-old, £240, a total of £20,770, with an extra five shillings not tacked on to his individual figures as a four-year-old. But Mr. Stead does not count the merit of a horse by the amount of money he earns, and his chief pride in Sasanof Is that he has won every Gold Cup race Un New Zealand; the Stead Gold Cup in 1918, the Trentham Gold Cup in 1919, the Awapunl Gold Cup In 1919 and 1921, the Ormond Gold Cup In 1921.”

Thus the Sydney Referee: Handicaps of £lOOO each are as plentiful throughout New Zealand as they are scarce in New South Wales. Outside Sydney, the only £lOOO prize In New South Wales is the Newcastle Cup, and In Sydney only the clubs racing at Randwick ever treat owners to a prize of £ 1000 or oter. In the Dominion the Hamilton R.C. Is the latest club to give a £ 1000 prize, that being the amount attached to the Hamilton Cup, miles, while on the second day of the meeting the Waikato Handicap carries £BOO. The Egmont Cup this month is worth £ 1200, and the Taranaki Cup £lOOO. These races are not run at meetings held in large cities, either. In face of this sort of thing, anti-tote people will tell you what a bad thing the machine is for owners in the Dominion, where, for the 1920-21 season the total distribution of prizemoney—galloping and trotting—was £610,675. New South Wales, with fully four times as many days’ racing of all kinds, did not reach two-thlrds of that sum. It often makes me wonder whether some of the statements mad-? by strong anti-tote people are due to absolute ignorance or to friendliness to bookmakers that carries Ihem as far as misrepresentation.
