ANNETTE KELLERMAN CUP. HAWKE’S BAY GIRL WINS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Swimming a strong double overarm stroke throughout. Miss Gladys Nuttall, of Hawke's Bay, to-day won the first contest for the Annette Kellerman Cup. Thousands of people enthusiastically acclaimed the winner as she left the water, showing very little effects after her long swim. J. Enwriglrt (Auckland) swam strongly into second place, and L. Hill (Canterbury), who started scratch, 44 minutes behind the limit girl, was a good third. Twenty-four of New Zealand’s best longdistance swimmers took part in the race, which was donated for competition by men and women over a harbor course of three miles. The w.eather conditions were ideal, the water being smooth and the air as warm as could be desired. The race took 2 hours 3 minutes 57 seconds to complete. The times of the placed competitors were; Miss Nuttall, •hr. 53min. 57sec.; Enwright lljr. 37unin. 4sec.; Hill, lhr. 30min. 47 2-ssec. Hill established the fastest time. Interviewed after the race, Miss Nuttall s..id: "I felt just a little queer over the first mile, but after that I was very copfldent. It was my firs! harbor race, my previous longest /;wim being a mile and a half. I have oeen training for this event for a month.”
