TARANAKI TOURNAMENT.

NEXT WEEK’S FIXTURE.

The Taranaki croquet tournaiment, to be at the Park Club's croquet lawns nt New Plymouth on Tuesday next, gives every indication of being a most successful and enjoyable gathering. The lawns are in fine playing order, the new lawn put down during last winter having been tested and officially opened. It :s fortunate mat tne tournament cun be held in. such pretty surroundings, the lawns being situated in a" portion of Pukekura Park. The walk from town to the lawns in the morning aiid the return in the evening could not be made in more delightful surroundings. Morning and afternoon tea and luncheon will be procurable at the club’s pavilion.

This Is the first Taranaki tournament to be held, and it is hoped that all lovers of croquet will endeavor to be present. rhe general public should find the play very Interesting, and by watching the games will see that there is a great deal of enjoyment and interest to be had in good croquet. The committees in charge of the tournament have everything ready fqr a successful week’s pla.v, should the various matches require that time, but It. is anticipated the tournaiment will be completed by Saturday, the 18th inst. Only fine weather is needed to ensure success, and it. is hoped that as a result or the tournament croquet in Taranaki will improve both in the standard of play and in the. increase in numbers of players for future seasons. The draw for the teams match is as fbllows: New Plymouth No. 1 a bye; Park rfo. 2 plays Waitara No. 3; Fitzroy No. 4 a bye; Hawera No. 5 a bye. In the finals the best two out of three games will be the winners.

NEW LAWNS OPENED. The Park croquet lawns were on fete on Friday afternoon, the occasion being the opening of the new croquet lawns. Visitors were present from the New Plymouth and Fitzroy clubs, and a most enjoyable afternoon was spent by all. Golf croquet was indulged in, some fifty players participating in the game. The lawns were in keen order, reflecting great credit on the green wardens. During the afternoon afternoon tea was dispensed by tbo Park croquet ladles. Mr. A. Ambury, on behalf of the Park Club, welcomed the visitors, and Mrs. Courtney, on behalf of t’he jrisiting players, suitably replied. The prizes were won by Mrs. Alleman and Mrs. Chivers.
