THE RAND STRIKE.
GENERAL STOPPAGE 01-POSED. By Telegraph.—l'ress A use —C.»i"ri"l-s Capetown, Feb. 9. The executive of the Industrial Federation declare that nb advantage would lie gained by declaring a general strike. It is understood the Government proposes to establish a board comprising representatives of the Chamber of Mines and an industrial chairman with plenary powers to report to Parliament, but not to function until the present crisis has passed.
In connection with the derailment of a Rhodesian passenger train on Tuesdav night a few miles south of Johannesburg, it is stated that the accident was caused through the removal of a rail. The prompt action of the driver in stopping tbe train averted a disaster. None was injured.
A number of alleged outrages, including the blowing up of the electric light standards, are reported. Some harmless explosions are reported which were probably due to persons in unlawful possession of dynamite getting rid of it. Six Dutchmen and a Britisher were arrested at the Robinson Deep mine on charges of inciting the public to violence. Large, but peaceable, demonstrations were held to demand the release of the arrested leaders.
