SOUTHERN MARKET: . By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. Reports of the early threshings are not so satisfactory as was anticipated some time ago. A few farmers have found themselves in the pleasant position of having to send to the merchants for more bags, but they are the exception. There has been more than enough rain in mid and South Canterbury and a continuance Will account for some discolored samples. Oats are a shade firmer, though there is no added enquiry and few are offering. From 2/2 to 2/4 for A grade Gartons covers quotations. North Island conditions have stimulated some . enquiry for barley and parcels have been sold for the north at 4/-. Early ryegrass samples are very poor and the opinion is forming that there will -be a small yield. For good heavy perennial up to 2/9, and in a few cases a few pence more, has been offered, but this is much beyond the quotation of the average seed coming forward, which is up to 2/4. Western Wolths are in much the same position as perennial, though some good crops have been threshed in the Ashburton district

Later reports from Banks Peninsula are that the cocksfoot harvest is very disappointing. Samples coming into the merchants are very light. Good 131 b. to 141 b. seed is worth 5d to s]d. but 4d to 4Ad covers the bulk of samples so far submitted. Potatoes are a shade weaker. Business for April delivery has been done at £4. The trouble from which crops in the Willowbridge district are suffering appears more serious than the ordinary early blight; but not of the gravity of Irish blight. Samples have been submitted to the Government biological department for examination. Outside parts of South Canterbury and isolated districts in mid Canterbury crops are reported to be clean.
