LAWN TENNIS.

NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB. CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI-FINAL. The championship of the New Plymouth Club was advanced a further stage yesterday, when J. C. Nicholson beat Dr Allison in the semi-finals. The’ other semi-final between C. Wefoster and K. G. Archer was recently won by Webster, so that Nicholson and Webster now meet in tte final on a day to be decided later. The scores in yesterday's match between Nicholson and Allison were 4—6, I—6, 7 —5, 7—5, and 6—4 in favour of Nicholson. The match was verj’ keenly congested and lasted for two and three-quarter hours, proving a severe test to each player. It was rem«>rkable tor another feature in that it saw Nicholson display unusual staying powers, fighting strenuously wfien vfctorj’ seemed to be slipping by and continuing to register a win in three successive sets after his opponent tad taken the first two. Allison, after winning the first two sets, was leading 5—4 in the. third set, and thus only required another game to win the match. It was then that Nicholson set out on an uphill fight, and by persistent and brilliant pliy, took the next three sets ’and the match.’

It is interesting to note that Nicholson and Webster met in the final last, year, Webster defeating Nicholson after he had held tne champion’lii j> for some seventeen years.
