life-saving in the surf. THE NELSON SHIELD. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. In glorious weather six life-saving teams competed in the Nelson Shield contest held at Lyall Bay to-day in the presence of a large number of spectators. The Governor-General was present. He complimented the swimmers on their splendid performances, especially Miss Gwitha Shand on her world recordbreaking effort. Results: Land drill.—Lyall Bay 1, Maranul 2, Canterbury 3. Life-saving in the surf.—Some splendid perfonmances were put up, especially by the visiting teams. The judge spoke highly of the general bearing and equipment, and complimented the New Zealand instructors on the almost perfect efficiency of some teams. Result: New Brighton B 140, Canterbury 138, Maranui A 135, New Brighton A and Lyall Bay 129, Hawke’s Bay 123, Marahul B 101.
