WHEAT PROSPECTS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn —Copyright. London, Feb. 7. Bathgate and Company stare that the world’s wheat crops promise a surplus so abundant that before the war it would have been thought, overwhelming. “We are not forgetting the possibility of damage and loss in the Northern Hemisphere in the next few months. If the damage is serious the surplus will be heeded to tide us over a bad year, but so far there is no need to anticipate anything in the nature of calamity, though same winter crops in the United States are deficient in acreage and condition.” —Aus.-N.Z. The sheep market has lifted with considerable rapidity since our last report, and now seems tp be settling at a firm level. A very hot demand lias set up for breeding ewes, young sheep especially, and graziers are operating freely on wethers and rape lambs nt values in accordance with the works’ scl.edule. Cattle also have brightened considerably, grown bullocks especially. This was particularly noticeable at Awaklno on 4th inst.. when bullocks made fully £1 a head in advance of late prices. Awaklno was a very good sale for cattle, practically the whole of a full yarding being fully cleared. Sheep at the same sale also sold well. At Douglas on January 3(t, failing mouth ewes 4s 4d to 5s 9d, wether lambs 9s lOd. shorn do 9s sd, wenner heifers 15s, heifers r.w.b. £2 7s fid, better quality do £5, stope cowi £2 to £2 Ils. WAIKATO MARKET REPORT. Beef.—Values have advanced though not m a very marked degree. Further improvement is, however, practically assured. Mutton.—Mutton values have rapidly increased and further rises are anticipated. Export buyers are putting up strong competition for all lines offering. Lambs.—These also continue to advance. The tone of Home reports is not quite so buoyant as it appeared a week or two ago, but this does not seem .to the activity of exporters. Store Cattle.—These are coming forward in greater numbers and meeting with a good reception. There is strong enquiry for al! classed and with the fear of drought removed this may be expected to continue. Grown cattle are still much ir demand, as indeed .■re all classes of steers. Very few calves Imve so far been yarded although fair competition awaits them. Store Sheep.—The rise in store sheep generally has been phenomenal and apparently lias not yet reached its limit, much to the gratification of sheep farmers, who are now enabled to smile at their despondency of a few weeks ago. The opening sheep fairs were exceedingly small, but the nrlces now ruling must entice stock to market, possibly with a steadying influence. It would seem wise for those wishing to clear to take advantage of the present opportunity. Good Breeding ewes are eagerly sought after and could De placed without difficulty at satisfactory prices. Rape lambs are also short of requirements. Pigs.---Pigs have also shown Improvement, especially in the lighter weights.
