STUDENT BURGLAR.

MANY CRIMES ADMITTED.

ASSAULT ON DOCTOR RECALLED.

By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. After a series of remands Charles Campbell Dawkins, a young Wellington University student, who was arrested in Christchurch, came before the Magistrate’s Court to-day to answer twenty-nine informations charging him with committing indictable offences. Twenty-eight, charges allege that he had been carrying out extensive operations as a housebreaker from July to November, and there is a further allegation that he was the perpetrator of the assault on Dr. P. F. McEvedy on the night of November 29 last.

The evidence was that Dawkins admitted to the police that he was a housebreaker and that he assaulted McEvedy.

Called by counsel, Dawkins said he was 25 years of age. At the time Dr. McEvedy was struck a revolver he had in his possession was loaded. He had never fired it, although he had intended to try it. “I never carried it on any previous job on which I was engaged,” said accused, who admitted that he had two other revolvers in his possession. The day he struck McEvedy he had been cleaning out a wardrobe and after he returned the goods he found he had misplaced the keys, and for that reason he put the revolver in a handbag. When he went out he took the bag with him. As it was he had not used either of the other two revolvers, and did not take them to Christchurch. He gave details of breaking and entering many houses. For some time past he had suffered from giddiness in 'the head and gastric trouble. He was on active service for two years. He was committed for trial.
