NEW PARTY IN POLITICS.

MORE EFFECTIVE OPPOSITION. MR. WILFORD THE LEADER. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The announcement was made to-night that the National Progressive and Moderate Labor Party and a number of opposition members of Parliament, not being members of Mr. H. E. Holland’s party, recognising the necessity for greater co-ordination in the interests of good government and in the furtherance of their common ideals, have decided to combine for the purpose of working more effectively in the House and at the next general election. The new party thus created will be known as the United Progressive Liberal-Labor Party. Mr. T. M. Wilford, who has hitherto held the position of Leader of the Opposition, has been elected Leader of. the new party, and an executive committee has also been elected, consisting of Messrs. Statham, Veitch, Forbes, Masters, Ngata, and Sidey. Mr. C. E. Statham said that he had little to add to the above statement. The political situation demanded the forming of an effective united opposition. The time had come when all personal interests should be subordinated to the best interests of the people, hence he and Mr. Kellett and their party organisation (the National Progressive and Moderate Labor Party) had agreed to join in the formation of a new united party.
