LAST WEEK’S FLOOD.

EXTENSIVE DAMAGE IN THE BACK-BLOCKS.

The severe storm of last Wednesday night caused a great deal of hardship to the settlers in the Tangitu-Pehu district w'ho have been cut off for several days from the outside world, the damage being most extensive. On the Ngatoto Road the Tangitu Stream bridge was entirely destroyed by the large logs carried down by the flooded river, which rose to unprecedented levels. Numerous slips also occurred, the Puke Road suffering most, the storm evidently reaching its climax in this valley. On this road alone there are twelve slips, some of them being several chains in length. One gully, over which a low-level bridge had been built, has been filled up completely with large logs and silt. One farmer, milking 80 cows, has to pack his cream two miles across country, part of the way being through bush. As labor is unobtainable it will be several w’eeks before the roads are open, the settlers having to turn out and clear the roads themselves.
