CHAUTAUQUA.

NEW PLYMOUTH SEASON. GUARANTEE NOT MET. The fourth session of Chautauqua at the Empire Theatre last night concluded the New Plymouth session. There was a large audience. The junior pageant produced by children who have been coached , during the previous few days was well carried out, and the young performers | presented a story with a moral—the acquisition of a children’s playground for the town. The concert by the Arcadian Quartette was a very enjoyable one, and the introduction of community singing under the leadership of Mr. Cyril Mee, was most popular. “Corner Stones of Character”, a lecture by Mr. J. C. Herbsman, proved an inspiring address. During the evening Mr. C. H. Burgess, chairman of the New Plymouth committee, announced that the sale of tickets was £55 short of the guarantee, and expenses of the season had to be met on top of this. He stated that a few had helped on Chautauqua now’ for four seasons at a slight loss, but it could hardly be expected that they should carry on. He indicated that unless further support was forthcoming the contract for next season’s Chautauqua would not be signed. The number of tickets sold for next year was 210, and a further similar number would need to. be taken up in order to complete.
