WAITARA.

Mr. and Mrs. Baird, of Belfast, Canterbury, are on a visit to Waitara, and attended the sports meeting on Saturday last. The death occurred in the New Plymouth Hospital on Friday last of Mr. R. Wilson. Mr. Wilson was the licensee of the Old Bridge Hotel. During his residence here he always took an active part in public affairs. The funeral took place on Sunday last at the Waitara Cemetery. The headmaster of the State school is insisting upon the boys and girls of the higher standards using the baths for the purpose of learning swimming, which is a necessary art as well ns healthful. The attendance at the school is reported to be very satisfactory. Last week’s opening was 343 roll number and the attendance was 3*26.

The Maoris of the district are holding a meeting this week at Manukorilii meeting house, at which Dr. Buck is expected to be present. A large meeting is to be held in March, in perpetuation of the Te Whiti programme. Thanks to a fine day and a liberal programme, the Football Club’s sports were a decided success. The gate takings amounted to £75 7s 9d, about £l6 better than last year; refreshment booth £l3; soft drinks, etc., £2O; social £ll.
