ALLEGED EMBEZZLEMENT.
UNION SECRETARY CHARGED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Feb. 7. John Arbuckle, formerly secretary of the New Zealand Miners’ Federation, and recently arrested in Australia, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court to-day to answer a charge that, on March 14 and August 27, 1921. he did steal the sum of £3BB 15s 7d, the moneys of Peter O’Rourke and others, known as the New Zealand Coal and Gold Shale Quarry and Tunnel Workers’ Association. It was stated by counsel for the association that the defalcations were about £5OO, but in regard to the Broken Hill funds the amotmt involved was something like £4300 br £5OOO. A remand until to-morrow week was granted, and bail was fixed at £lOOO, and two sureties of £5OO each, accused to report once a day to the police.
