LAWN TENNIS.

TARANAKI FIXTURES.

Lawn tennis is probably the most popular and widely played of any game. ’So many people were playing tennis last year in England that at one period balls were really difficult to procure, and a great tennis season is expected this year. In Taranaki the most important fixture of the season is the annual championship and handicap tournament which takes place on the New Plymouth Club’s courts on Thursday, February 16, and the following days. Club secretaries and all intending competitors should note that entries close on Friday, February 10. A large entry is expected, and various well-known players are taking part. Eight grass courts will be available for the tournament. On March 3 Wellington is sending a team to play Taranaki at New Plymouth, and on their form as shown at the tournament largely depends players’ likelihood of being selected to represent the province against Wellington in the inter-provincial match.
