DUNEDIN SCRATCHINGS. Dunedin, Feb. G. Eleus was scratched for the Dunedin Cup and Burrangong for the Welter at 9.25 this morning. OFFER FOR THE HAWK. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Feb. 6. 11.25 p.m. Melbourne, Feb. 6. It is understood a Melbourne sportsman offered £3OOO for the New Zealand racehorse The Hawk. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.”) Sydney papers give particulars of the hurdle race won by our old friend Quiniro. at Randwick on January 21. It was a handicap sweepstakes of 2sovs. each, with 4Uosovs. added money. Distance, about 2 miles. There were eight starters, including tl:e New Zealand bred Forward Lady. Quiniro was third favorite, and led all the way, and simply strolled In. Frank McGrath, who trains Quiniro. states that the stable’s commission was ’only a small on£. but evidently somebody thought highly of the horse’s chance to see him so short in the betting. Frank Wootton is just as successful over “the bobs” as he was on the flat, and from January 1 to December 10 last year he won 54 -of the 184 jumping races In which he rode In England. The Earl of Derby, vice-president of the British Legion, recently donated £lOOO representing 5 per cent, of his racing winnings for 1921, to be administered by the Benevolent Department of the Legion. It will he allocated for the benefit of ex-offleers and other ranks In Liverpool. During the war various racecourses In England were occupied by the military. It might have been thought patriotism would have prevented the managements from making particularly heavy claims for compensation, but this was not so. In all cases, and among the awards notified by the War Compensation Court last month were : York Race Committee. £4491; Epsom, £4475; Hurst- Park, £20,446; Western Meeting Club, £11,569; Alexandra Park, £5115, and £285 a week from August 18, 1919, to April 11, 1920, and £5O a week afterwards, reinstatement of buildings reserved; Newbury, £1490; New

Leicester Club, £3800; Sandown Park, £4475; and Doncaster, £3482. The last mail from England brings the results of the Newmarket December sales, and contrary to general expectations they were extraordinarily good, some high prices being realised, there being keen demand for racehorses and brood mares with any pretensions of class. On the opening day only two topped the thousand mark, but on the second day business was very keen and buyers from abroad were, as usual, well to the fore. Mr. Goculdas, the well-knojvn Indian racing man, gave 3000gns. for the two-year-old colt. Flaming Orb. by Flying Orb from St. Filans, by St. Frusquin. As Flaming Orb’s engagements are void owing to the death of his owner, presumably he will be sent to India. Frank Bullock gave 2100gns. for a three-yeai-old colt by Bachelor’s Double from Painted Lady, and maybe he purchased that colt for an Australian friend. Mr. Goculdas, with whom money seems no object, gave 2800 gns. for a two-year-old gelding by Marcus from Nevolnice, and an English writer remarked that the vendor can consider himself decidedly lucky to get such a handsome price for his two-year-old. Mr. Goculdas Is going to start , a stud In England, and he was a very heavy buyer through his agent, Mr. J. Crawford, as in addition to those I have mentioned, he gave 5800gns. for Petrea, who Is by St. Amant. One of the most interesting sales from an Australian point of view was that of Perfect Peach the dam of Sarchedon, Mr. Percy Miller’s grey stallion. She was sold for 1500gns. Her daughter, Reine de Peekes, realised 6000gns., the top price of the sale. Reine de Peches is by Roi Herode, so is almost fully related to Sarchedon.
