PUBLIC HEALTH.

THE TARANAKI COUNTY. REPORT FOR 1921. A report showing the number of infectious diseases notified in the Taranaki County during 1921 was received at yesterday’s meeting of the Taranaki County Council from the Inspector of Health (Mr. F. Swindells). The report showed that the percentage of diseases was 5.66 per 1000 of population, and the numbers were: Scarlet fever 9, diphtheria 13, tuberculosis 1, pneumonia 1, infantile paralysis 1; total, 25.

Commenting on this, the inspector stated: Adequate precautions were taken with regard to the cases, 19 having been removed to hospital for treatment. It will be noticed that scarlet fever and diphtheria account for the bulk of the cases. In several instances the figures have been increased by an extension of the disease within the same household before the nature of the trouble had been detected; otherwise the number of cases would have been greatly reduced. Notwithstanding the figures, taken on a population basis they are very satisfactory for the county for the year, being at the rate of 5.66 per 1000 of the population.
