JJ.C. AUTUMN MEETING. > FIRST DAY ACCEPTANCES! The acceptances for the first day of the Taranaki Jockey Club's autumn meeting, which opens on Thursday, must be regarded as very satisfactory. Ten remain in the Taranaki Cup, and with recent cup winners like Marqtfeteur, Vespucci, Landslide, Truthful and Egmont Park engaged, as well as other good horses, speculation should be brisk. In the Flying Handicap only six of the nineteen nominated are accepted, but a good race should result if n 1 go to the post. The other races have d rawn fields of about thirteen, so that good racing is assured. The acceptances are as follow:

C.J.C. MEETING. PALESTRINA WINS MIDSUMMER HANDICAP PLUTO THE MIDDLE PARK PLATE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christel - urch, Feb., 4. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting was held to-day in fine weather. The attendance was up to the average, but the course was a trifle dead as the result of recent rain. The totalisator receipts were £29,487, against £20,016 last year. Results: HORNBY HANDICAP.—Grim Joke (W. Scottie) 1, Raconteur 2, Glentanner 3. Also started : Hylans, General Petain, Mandrake, Roniform. Won by a head, the third horse three lengths back. Time, 2min. 12sec. Roniform threw tis rider (V. Thwaltes) after doing the preliminary and he', had a shoulder injured. As another rider was not available the horse took no part in the race.

TRIAL STAKES.—Giant Killer (H. Young) 1, Bluff 2, Conflict 3. Also started: Hillock, Koha, Friseo Mail, Charlatan, Radiac, Cuirasse, Dame Fortune. Won by a length, the same distance between second and third. Time, Imin. 30sec.

MIDDLE PARK PLATE.—PIuto (G. Young) 1, Winning Hit 2, Prosperity 3. The only starters. Pluto was In front ail" the way and won comfortably by a length. Prosperity being twelve lengths away. Time, Imin. 13 l-ssec.

MIDSUMMER HANDlCAP.—Palestrina (C. Emerson) 1, Mazuma 2, Trespass 3. Also started: Foo Chow, Eleus, Kllrush, Warlove, Purple Spur, Bengeroop, Horatius. Palestrina moved up on entering the straight and was in charge a hundred yards from home, and won easily by half a length from Mazama, who beat Trespass by the saune distance. Time, 2min. 34sec.

The Taranaki, Dunedin and Poverty Bay clubs race on Thursday and Saturday, and the Te Kui-tt Club on the latter day. Good fields are assured at. all gatherings, and although money’ is not as plentiful as in the past, quite as many patrons appear to roll up to enjoy the sport.

Wanganui nominations are fairly good all round. The Cup has attracted 23 torses, and the Flying Handicap 20. The minor events have filled well, with the exception of the hurdle races, 'which will only be contested by small, weak fields. As usual, Taranaki stables arc strongly represented, and the- open events have attracted some oi the best horses in the Dominion.
