REPAIRING THE DAMAGE.
SOME SMART WORK. (From Our Urenui Correspondent.) The torrential rain which fell up till davlisht on Thursday morning, coming as it did upon the wet weather prevailing during the past few days caused a■number of slips on the main road to Uruti, whilst the Mangamahoe and Mimi Rivers rose to a considerable height, causing the bridge over the former to be lifted from its piles and swung in mid-air, an occurrence whie.i has happened in the case of heavy floods on previous occasions; but from its positmn it will scarcely be got on the piles again. Owing to a large land slip which took place on this side of Mr. Geo. Baker’s residence, and others further on, several milk carts were unable to deliver their milk to the Waitoitoi factory, and Mr. A. Smith’s Uruti bus was also hung up. However, the situation was saved by the large bus coming from Urenui and picking up the passengers at the nearest slip. Mr. S. Sutton, a member of the Clifton County Council, was on the scene early, and, with commendable promptitude, soon had a gang of men to work opening up the road for traffic. Telephone communication was also somewhat disorganised, but the. linesman was quickly out from New Plymouth, repairing damages, and the mails were also got through in good time. I The Uruti cream could not be got through, but a wire rope and cage has
now been erected across the Mangamahoe. Several large slips also occurred on the Mangamahoe Road, and a house of Mr. W. G. Glassford’s, in which Mr. Couchman resides, was two feet under water, and a couple of dogs belonging to the latter, which were under the house, were drowned.
By good fortune, a large mob of sheep belonging to Mr. King, which were to have been brought out by Mr. R. Baker, were not placed in the yards, as is usual, but in a small paddock; otherwise the lot would have been drowned.
