Mr. J. Veale is on a holiday visit to New Plymouth.
Mr. N. H. Hooker, of Hamilton, is on a short holiday visit to New Plymouth. The Rev. G. T. Beale, vicar of Holy Trinity, Fitzroy, returned from his holiday trip last night. Plunfcet Nurse Ewart arrived last night from the south and will commence duty in Stratford to-morrow. The Clifton County Council, at its meeting yesterday, passed a vote ofi sympathy with Cr. T. McKenzie, who was taken ill after the last meeting. The death at New York at the end of November last of Mr. Robert Chase Morris, formerly a well-known resident of Wellington, is recorded in the New Zealand Times.
The Board of Governors of the New Zealand Institute, at the annual meeting, passed a resolution of sympathy with Mr. S. P. Smith, who has been ill for some time.
The members of the New Plymouth Bar foregathered at the Criterion Hotel last everyng, the occasion being the retirement of Mr. J. B. Roy from active practise, after 44 years’ work, and the completion of 51 years’ practise by Mr. R. C. Hughes. The evening was spent pleasantly in reminiscence and story. A resolution of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr. James Burgess was passed by the general committee of the Taranaki Agricultural j Society yesterday, Mr. Burgess having been one of the oldest members of the society. A vote of condolence with Mr. J. Gilmour on the loss of his son-in-law, Mr. J. Craig (Manaia), was also passed.
Dr. Jowett, Congregationalist, is resigning the pastorate of Westminster Chapel on the ground of ill-health. Dr. Jowett, who* is 57 years of age, has been Minister of Westminster Chapel since 1918. His first appointment was to the pastorate of St. James’ Congregational Church, Newcastle-on-Tyne, which he held from 1889 to 1895. From there he went to Carr’s Lane, Birmingham, until 1911, when he was appointed to Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, New York, where he remained until 1918. He was the author of numerous religious publications.
Colonel R. J. Collins, C.M.G., 1.5.0., who recently? relinquished the position of Controller and Auditor-General of the Dominion, is on a visit to New Plymouth. He is an old Taranaki boy. Nearly sixty years ago he entered the Government service here, and has held many important administrative positions in the Treasury Department, and finally that of Controller and Auditor-General, from which he retired on December 31 last., He is well known throughout the Dominion for his active work in connection with rifle shooting, being executive officer of the Dominion Rifle Association for many years. Mrs. Collins, who accompanies her husband, was born in New Plymouth, where she has many relations and friends.
