DAIRYMEN’S STRAITS

LEGISLATION ASKED FOR. (From our Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, Feb. 2. A meeting was held this afternoon at which Mr. A. E. Fear, secretary of the New Zealand Dairy Farmers’ Union, addressed members of Parliament with reference to the financial straits in which many dairy farmers find themselves, in consequence of having paid high prices for their lands when products were at the peak. Mr. Fear explained that many were unable to m«*Pt their current liabilities and interest charges, and he desired to get members interested in the hope that some legislation might be passed on the lines already asked for by the Dairy Farmers’ Union. A committee was set up consisting of Messrs. J. A. Young (Waikato). F. F. Hockly (Rotorua), H. Poland (Ohinemuri), McCombs (Lyttelton), and McNicol (Pahiatua), which will confer with the dairy farmers’ representatives, and later report to a further meeting of members, with a view to a deputation waiting on the Prime Minister. In all probability some form of legislation will be asked for giving a reasonable opportunity to settlers to readjust then finances, where they show a prospect oi meeting their liabilities if they receive some such concession, and no injustice is done to other parties.
