FEDERAL FINANCE. Melbourne, Jan. 30. The Federal revenue for the half-year ended December 31 is £682,000 above the corresponding half-year, while the expenditure is substantially curtailed. It is anticipated that if the result is equally as good during the remainder of the year, reduced taxation may be possible. —Argus. QUEENSLAND MEAT INDUSTRY. Brisbane, Jan. 30. The Premier stated that the situation of the meat industry was grave and the outlook for cattlemen who have large numbers ready to kill as a result of a good season, was gloomy. He explained the official report why Argentine meat sold at higher rates in London than Aus tralian. Argentine, cattle were killed when two years old and Australian when four. The former, therefore, were of better marketable quality. The Argentine beasts were fatter, carried a larger proportion of flesh, and were a shorter time in cold storage, and deterioration was consequently less than Australian.
