OPUNAKE.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The seaside annual fete was postponed on Saturday owing to the wet weather. The 'committee had made arrangements for a large attendance, but the weather spoilt it all. A dance was held in the pavilion in the evening. The continual downpour prevented a large num'ber of country people from attending. On Sunday afternoon the Federal Band gave a recital at the beach. The attendance was good. Afternoqn tea was supplied, The death of Miss Lucy Field was an unwelcome surprise to Opunake-itee. Much sympathy is expressed for the parents, who are well-known residents of the Arawhata Road. The funeral took place on Sunday. A very long line of mourners followed the remains to their last resting place. The Rev. C. Palmer took the funeral service.

Miss Maggie Windelburn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Windefburn, of Opunake, has been appointed a pupil teacher at the Hawera public school. Miss Windelburn has been attending the Dunedin Girls’ High School. This has been a good season for vegetables. We should hear in a few weeks’ time from growers about record pumpkins.

Plum crops are on the light size this season.

The local bodies should have given a little more publicity to the laying of the foundation stone of the Opunake Hospital. It was one of the most important affairs that has taken place in Opunake, and worth a little more publicity than it received. •

The installation ceremony in connection with the Star of Opunake Lodge took place on Tuesday evening. The installation was performed by the D.D.G.M., Bro. Luicein Libeau (of Eltham), assisted by Bros. C. Libeau, V.G., and Bros. W. Newson and Libeau (members of visiting lodges). The Dominion Supervisor, Bro. W. Crooke, was also present. The officers pf the Opunake Lodge for the ensuing term are:—J.P.G., J. C. Carr; N.G., D. Holmes; V.G., L. Julian; .R.S, A. Hurad; P.S., D. Rosa; L.T., R. Bowman.
