PORT ALBANY RESCUE;

(To the Editor.) Sir, —I read the account in your paper concerning the plucky rescue of the ship’s carpenter by a sailor on Wednesday night. J should like to draw attention that the rescue could not have been effected had it not been for the rest of his shipmates who were with him, and who assisted with great difficulty in the rescue. Great credit and thai.ks are due to those men who doggedly stuck to their difficult task in spite of the intense darkness, and also that “Chippy” slipped twice from the rope which had been tied around him to get him on terra firma. One man actually held on to one end of the rope by his hands, whilst three men were hanging on to the other end. Great credit is also due to the chief steward, who. when the alarm was given, without hesitation sprang from his bunk and ’phoned for the doctor, which promptitude no doubt saved the unfortunate man’s life, he also applying artificial respiration. Petersen was the first man down to rescue the carpenter. I should like you to publish this fact, and also the names of the gallant men who assisted, for they are all heroes, never pausing or hesitating to assist in that rescue, which I shall never forget as long as I live. —I am, etc., " AN EYE-WITNESS. (Also one of the crew of the Port Albany.)

The men who assisted Petersen in the rescue are: —Joseph Malfiggian, Leonard Elies, stewards; Jack Lowther and Williams, sailor; Smith, quarter-master; Petersen and Thomas, sailors; also the chief steward, Mr. Hales.
