RESULT OF FLIPPANCY.
OUTCRY AGAINST LORD LEVERHULME.
By Telegraph.-—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, Jin. 29. Being flippant over a scriptural text ha« got Lord Leverhulme Into hot water with the Wesleyans, who are taking official action as a protest. The Incident occurred at the Premier’s demonstration at the Central Hall on January 21. Lord Leverhulme, who presided, said: “The Premier and Government have determined that every Treasury note of theirs shall be honored. Across them were written the words: *1 know my Redeemer liveth.’ ” Protesters started the ball rolling by writing to the Times, especially objecting to the laughter and < heers with which the remark was greeted.
The Methodist Times, under a heading “Blasphemy at the Centra] Hall,” announces that the trustees will not let the hall again for objectionable purposes. It is pointed out that Lord Leverhulme only repeated the words actually written on an American greenback printed after the civil war.
Strict Puritans did not find the quotation offensive, but others present at the meeting declare that many were profoundly shocked, including the Premier. This is the real reason why the gathering kept up the cry of ‘time,’ causing Lord Leverhulme to terminate his speech. A previous explanation was that the gathering was merely impatient to hear the Premier. The trustees’ spokesman says: “We cannot have this sort of thing in Wesleyan headquarters.”—United Service.
