TOUR OF SOUTH AFRICANS. VISIT TO NEW PLYMOUTH. A meeting of the committee of the New Plymouth Amateur Athletic Association was held last night, Mr. L. B. Webster in the chair. The chief business transacted was that in connection with the approaching visit of the team of South African athletes. The meeting is to be held on tne High School ground on Friday afternoon, February 10, and this date, comin* as it does between the two race days, should prove a most suitable one. The following programme of events was adopted: 100 yards, 220 yards, 440 yards 880 yards, 1 mile open handicap, high jump handicap, relay race South Africa v. Taranaki, 220 yards and 880 yards secondary schools handicaps, 100 yards and 440 yards primary schools handicap, and primary schools relay race. Entries for all events close with the hon. secretary, box 47, New Plymouth, at noon, on Saturday next, February 4, . It is pleasing to note that the visit of the South Africans is being eagerly awaited by local athletes, for a number have been in training for some time, and each evening sees a fair muster in action on the High School around. A number of prominent H a ‘ wera runners have notified the local association of their intention to com pete, and some are also expected frojn Wanganui. It is to be hoped that the' aeneral public will back up the enterprise of the local association by attending the meeting. Not only will they soe in action some ot the finest runners in the world to-day. but also by their presence show that larana u people realise that such visits do much to bind together the different parts ot qnr Empire. Taranaki was second to none in its welcome to the Springboks and in appreciation of their prowess, and can be relied upon to show the same spirit towards the visiting ath letee.
