THE LAST SCENE.

BURIAL OF THE POPE.

A SIMPLE CEREMONY. CHOOSING SUCCESSOR. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Jan. 27, 5.5 p.m. Rome, Jan. 26. The Pope was buried this evening. The body was placed in the coffin in the Cbr.pel of the Holy Sacrament and absolution was then read. The coffin was then carried to the vaults and interred there with as little ceremony as possible.

The Pope’s coffin consisted of three casings, the first of cypress wood, lined with silk; the second of lead: and the third of elmwood. After the body was placed in the crypt, Monsignor Galli’ read an account of the Pope’s life from a parchment scroll, which, placed in a copper cylinder, was laid in the coffin, also a red velvet purse containing specimens of all the medals struck during the Pope’s reign. The casing was sealed by two violet silk ribbons, placed crosswise over the lid. The Had casing was similarly sealed. Rome, Jan. 26.

The main issue at the election of the new Pope will be the Roman question. Whoever is selected will be expected, either to re-enter official relations’ with the Government or break off the semiofficial relations now existing. There is considerable diversity of opinion among the cardinals, and it is improbable that a foreigner will be chosen.—Times Service.
